Natural Flood Management in Mid Wales

Natural flood management is an approach that works with the landscape to slow the flow of water during heavy rainfall, helping to reduce the risk of flooding further downstream.

We recently assisted Radnorshire Wildlife Trust with a local project in Mid Wales, helping to create structures known as “leaky dams” using natural timber.

Leaky dams are placed in streams or small water channels. They allow normal water flow to pass through, but slow the movement of water during periods of heavy rain. This helps temporarily store water within the landscape and reduce peak flood levels.

Using a portable petrol winch and pulley system, our team was able to move larger pieces of timber into position and help construct secure structures within the stream channel.

Projects like this show how arboriculture and forestry skills can support environmental initiatives that benefit both local communities and wildlife.
